Symptoms & Cures - Cabin Pressure... |
| |
One of the most common in-flight health problems, albeit not serious, is the effects of cabin pressure. Planes are pressurized at a much lower pressure than we are use to at ground level causing less oxygen to circulate in the air.
Effects of cabin pressure can include: |
| |
- Ears hurting during take-off or landing - you need to swallow lots - chewing gum, suck a sweet or drink through a straw
- Avoid alcohol as it has 2 to 3 times the effect of a drink at sea level
- Keep well hydration by drinking lots of water

| |
| |
Jet lag symptoms vary individual to individual, but normally the effects are of fatigue as the internal body clock is out of phase with the destination time.
Jet lag is worse when more time zones have been travelled through, or when travelling east.
Try the following tips to avoid jet lag: |
| |
- Eat your meals closer to the destination time, and try and get some sleep on the plane around the times of the new time you are travelling to
- Set watches to the new destination time once your taken off
- Eat lightly, drink lots of water and avoid alcohol
- Caffeine drinks can help mask fatigue immediately after flying
- Try some herbal sleeping pills or speak to your doctor if your symptoms haven't disappeared after a week
- It's OK to have the odd nap during the day but limit them to about half an hour
- Use Ginseng, used for centuries in fighting fatigue
