General Security Tips ... |
Let's start by giving you some general security tips to think about before you leave - simple things but things many of us forget to do. Also, things that can give away that our homes are standing empty and making them an easy target for burglars.
Home security tips need to be taken seriously, as almost half of all home break-ins happen when a house or flat is left standing empty.
Listed here are some general security tips to get you started:
- Built up newspapers and milk deliveries on your doorstep are a real tell-tale sign you're not home - cancel them.
- Leave ordering any parcels that will come Recorded Delivery until you're back, as they'll be returned to the sender after one week at the Post Office, again telling people you aren't at home.
- Don't be charge any non-attendance fees by re-schedule your appointments that are booked for whilst you're away, and arousing suspicion that you're not home.
- Arrange for a member of your family, a good friend or even a trusted neighbour can pop in every few days to remove post from your doorstep. Even to water your garden and pot plants.
- Avoid a smelly fridge by binning perishable items.
- As a safety measure, and to save energy too, turn off all your plug sockets like your TV, DVD, PC etc. at the mains.
- In the warmer months, turn off your central heating and your hot water to save yourself some money on your bills. If you're travelling in the colder months simply turn both down, not off!, so your house is kept gently warm.
- Your pets will need looking after so get a friend or family member to either come to your house to look after them, making sure they are fully aware of your pet's needs. Or book them into a cattery or kennel, packing their favourite toys and a few special treats too.

Luggage Allowances & Packing Tips ... |
When you're packing your bags you need to bear in mind your luggage allowances outlined by your airline. As otherwise, if you go over these luggage allowances you'll be liable to pay a fine, and to re-pack your bags into a number of smaller ones. Or, worst of all, you'll have to dump the excess luggage that will be taken away and destroyed.
Find out what your luggage allowances are by checking the reverse of your flight ticket. However, as a rule most airlines state your baggage should weigh no more than 70lbs/32kgs.
If however you need to take more baggage with you then check with your airline their policy, in advance of travel. The same should be done if you're travelling with large or outsized baggage.
Not only does your luggage have to weigh in correctly at check-in you'll also be asked a number of questions for security. Things like have you left your bags unattended, did you pack them yourself. Has anyone added anything to your bags - this includes hand luggage too. Also to make sure you aren't carrying any restricted or prohibited goods in your baggage.
You can find details on restricted items, and prohibited goods, in the Security section of this website. |
