If you're flying from London City Airport make the most of the journey from the moment you set off so you enjoy your time at the airport - for a spot of shopping perhaps - and have a relaxing flight. Just use this simple to use guide with tips on parking at London City.

Travel Tips For London City Airport ...

This information's been prepared for passengers flying from London City Airport and covers getting to London City, parking at London City, travelling with children, disabilities or special needs and how to stay comfortable during your flight.

Getting to London City Airport ...

London City Airport is situated in the heart of the London Docklands area. It's very easily accessible by road, tube train, the Docklands Light Railway, taxi, car and bus.

Visit our ‘Getting to the Airport’ section if you're travelling to London City Airport by:

London City Airport Parking ...

Whatever your parking requirement - service, duration of stay or cost - the parking at London City will have the option that's best for you.

For those dropping off or collecting passengers, or for those on short duration trips, it's best to use the short stay car park.

For those passengers travelling for longer than a few days it's best to choose from one of the long stay parking options.

There's the long stay car park with a free transfer to the airport terminal, however this will add time to your journey, or can be inconvenient if travelling with children, disabilities or special needs. Alternatively, for the very best in airport parking at London City choose the meet and greet valet parking option.

Meet and greet parking allows you not to worry about the transfer bus, you just drive straight to the terminal and pull up outside. Here you'll be met by the meet and greet Rep who takes your car to a secure car park. On your return your car is brought back to the airport terminal, right outside, by the Rep who's waiting for you.

Valet meet and greet is also particularly good for business persons who don't have the time to drive to the long stay car park and get the transfer bus. Those travelling with children, disabilities or special needs. Those with heavy bags and, or sports equipment.

You can pay around £83 for one week's meet and greet, and £118 for two weeks, depending on the operator you choose.

Pre-booking valet parking is always advised to ensure availability.

You could opt for the Fast Track car parking option that's available from London City Airport.  Prices start from £11.00 for 24 hours or part thereof and provides good access into the airport terminal.

Arriving At The Airport ...

It's always best to head to check-in as soon as you arrive at the airport. That way you can deposit your baggage so that it can be loaded onto the Aircraft, leaving you free to browse the shops or to get something to eat.

Security's increased a lot in recent years and it's had a knock on effect on the time it will take you to check in. Plan to arrive at check-in with the following amounts of time ahead of your flight:

Type Of Flight Check In Time
Long Haul Flights 3 HOURS before departure
European Flights 2 HOURS before departure
UK & Northern Ireland Flights 1 HOUR before departure

It's essential you keep your main luggage and hand luggage with you at all times when in the airport. You mustn't under any circumstances, let another passenger look after or carry your bags. You must never agree to look after another passenger's bags either, or carry anything either in your luggage or onto the plane for someone. And should you notice any unattended packages alert a member of airport staff immediately .

Once in the departure lounge look at the LCD screens to check for your boarding gate. Make sure you leave to get to your boarding gate in good time, as some can take up to 30 minutes to get to.

Information on London City Airport security checks can be found by visiting the Airport Safety and Security section within this Fly Guide.

Making Your Flight Comfortable ...

Make your journey as comfortable as you can by making sure you have everything you need in your hand luggage.

Hand luggage essentials are medication, travel sickness pills, an eye mask, ear plugs, snacks if you get hungry but not diary or fruit (even if you are having a meal on-board as they can be very small). Pack books, buy some magazines at the airport and maybe pack your stereo so you are kept entertained, especially on a long flight.

Don't forget that the cabin pressure can cause painful swollen feet and hands. You need to stay hydrated so drink water and limit your alcohol. Some passengers suffer from dry skin so think about some moisturiser too.

By removing your shoes and socks and letting your feet breath can make you feel more comfortable too. And pack a warm jumper as it will get cold on board the plane.

Important: Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition in which blood clots develop in the deep veins of the legs. Evidence shows us that flights, especially long haul when passengers have little or no exercise, may have increased risk of developing DVT.

Walking around on the flight as best you can will help. So will doing some leg stretches and rotating your ankles and feet. It all helps to get the blood circulating.

Advice on DVT can be found by visiting the Department of Health website click Here and it explains who could be more at risk and how you can help prevent it.

  Staying Comfortable When Flying
  1. Upgrade For the ultimate in staying comfortable ask for an upgrade to Business Class or First Class.
  2. Front Row Seats If unsuccessful ask for a front row seat. Or one by an emergency exit as they normally have extra leg room.
3. Aisle Seats One of you at least can get a bit of extra leg room by asking for an aisle seat so you can stretch your legs out. And it means you can get to the bathroom easily, without having to climb over other passengers in the seats next to you.
4. Pillow To help you sleep ask for a blanket and pillow.  Or you could buy a blow up neck supporter pillow (that will come in handy on the beach). Ear plugs can also help induce sleep along with an eye mask.
5. Painful Ears Painful ears during take off and landing are very uncomfortable. So invest in some special ear plugs, like a make called Earplanes, that equalise air pressure on each side of your ear drums.  They're also good if you've got an allergy or a sinus problem.
6. Dehydration Dehydration on a flight is caused by not drinking enough water (and having too much alcohol to drink). Drink lots of water therefore, and it's best to carry a bottle on to the plane with you.
7. Snacks Airline meals are often very small so many passengers get hungry half way through their journey. Pack some snacks to keep the hunger pains at bay.
8. Anxiety If you suffer from anxiety you could try using some breathing exercises throughout your flight. Some passengers find that keeping their mind of things with a good book or crossword helps. Failing that, speak to your Doctor who maybe able to prescribe you something to help.

Travelling With Babies & Children ...

When travelling with children bear in mind they are going to get bored and fed up when stuck in a small space on a plane, even on a short flight. To avoid them getting terribly upset make sure you've packed plenty of things for them to do.

Colouring books and crayons are nice and light weight for your hand luggage. Pack a few books for them to read too. Kids love playing games so pack some travel varieties of games you can all take turns in playing.

If you want to pack some of their cuddly toys you could all have a go at making up exciting stories, all with an aeroplane twist!

If you're travelling with a young baby it's advised to take the following with you - plenty of baby food or formula milk, and more for any delays you might encounter. Finger food and nibbles. Cold water sterilising tablets are handy if you are on a long flight and travelling with a very young baby. Lots of spare nappies, bibs, muslins and a comforter if they have one. Also pack spare clothes - and warm ones as it gets very cold on a flight - in case of any accidents. A familiar blanket from home will help them sleep and don't forget that they'll want some toys to play with too.

Travelling For The Disabled ...

Disabled or special needs passengers find most airlines well equipped to deal with their needs. However, it's always best to check that the assistance required is included in the flight ticket price, and that the airline is fully aware of the help required in advance of the flight.

Sometimes passengers in a wheelchair are asked to transfer into one owned by the airline so theirs can be loaded onto the plane. Do ask if you'd rather stay in your own wheelchair until boarding in case this request can be accommodated, but do so in advance of travel. .

Special assistance vehicles - that should be pre-booked - are a good idea for immobile passengers, or those with difficulties walking long distances. In many larger airports, do note, boarding gates for example can take a 30 minute walk to get to.
