It's a travel nightmare - during your flight your luggage has been lost. Well read our London City Airport Lost Luggage guide for unofficial information on what to do and how to claim.

London City Airport Lost Luggage ...

What a frustrating start to your holiday - you arrive safe and well at your destination only your baggage doesn't. Even with today's hi-tech computer tracking systems baggage delays and even losses are still quite common.

This guide gives unofficial information about how to claim if you are suffering from the following: London City Airport lost luggage, London City delayed baggage, London City damaged baggage or London City stolen baggage.

Here you will find the contact details of your airline but filling in their name in the box below:

London City Airport Lost Luggage - In the first instance ...

In the very first instance you must tell report your lost luggage to the Lost Luggage Desk at the airport, the airline are then duty bound to start searching for your luggage.
Give a description of your luggage to the Desk and a brief description of contents. You'll then be given a reference number for you to track the progress of your lost baggage by phone or online.

When a claim is being dealt with by the airline they take an estimated value of the claim but often reduce it to take into account deprecation - so just like most insurance claims the settlement rarely matches the value of the claim.

Most airlines don't actually declare your luggage as lost until it's been missing for after 21 days.

After 21 days you can start a claim against the airline who carried your baggage. In settling claim amounts many airlines say they are bound by the Montreal Convention in paying passengers approx. £800 per person.

If your airline says that your London City Airport lost luggage claim should be put through your travel insurance then they are in breach of the Montreal Convention. As stated by the British Airports authority they are responsible for the safety of your luggage.

Transfer Flights

If your plane journey means connecting flights between more than one airline then you may be able to check-in your luggage for the whole journey at the very first check-in point.

If you do only check in your baggage once and something happens to your luggage you can claim against any one of the airlines that carried it. Do expect the airlines to try and blame each other and refuse the claim. If so they are in breach of the Montreal Convention.

LRTs - Limited Release Tags

An LRT - limited release tag - is applied to certain items of luggage like musical instruments, sporting equipment and or prams.

The idea behind the LRT is to remove the airline’s liability should the item be damaged during transit and thus refuses a claim. If they do they are in breach of the Montreal Convention.

London City Delayed Damaged ...

The Montreal Convention states that a passenger's luggage is deemed as just delayed for 21 days.

If you experience London City delayed baggage then the chances are the airline will offer immediate one-off cash payments to cover emergency goods like toiletries and underwear.

Others pay a set amount per day for a maximum number of days. Whilst other airlines ask you to buy the goods and then they reimburse you.

After the 21 days you can then start your claim for your London City Airport lost luggage.

London City Damaged Baggage...

When deciding how much money your claim is worth the airline will base the amount on the case value and any contents - in some cases you will have to provide a list of the contents along with original receipts.

If it's just your baggage that is damaged then airlines tend to simply offer a replacement from their store cupboard.

London City Stolen Baggage ...

When individual goods go missing from your luggage it's very difficult to get any compensation as it's difficult to prove that the goods were in the cases in the first place.

Therefore use high quality luggage and put all your valuables in your hand luggage.

Do bear in mind also that many airlines have a clause in their terms & conditions stating that they don't accept responsibility for perishable or valuable items (like cameras, camcorders, mobile phones, documents or jewellery) in hold luggage.

This clause is arguable with the Montreal Convention as they have carried the luggage.

Equally if luggage is listed as “items unacceptable as baggage” in the airline’s conditions of carriage you won't be able to claim either.

Help & Advice ...

The following tips and advise could help you prevent, or at least help track your London City Airport lost luggage:

  • A list of what everything in your cases will act as an inventory that can help if claiming for lost luggage

  • If your luggage label falls off a piece of paper inside the case with your contact details will help trace the bags

  • Flymycase transport luggage World-wide

  • Do keep your receipts for those goods packed in your cases

  • Valuables should be kept in your hand luggage, not main luggage in case such times are deemed as 'unacceptable baggage items'

  • Always take out travel insurance for you and your luggage - learn more by visiting our Travel Insurance Page

  • Bright coloured luggage should prevent other travellers from mistaking your bags as their own
