When shopping at London City Airport, you should keep your boarding card with you at all times so this can be presented with the goods you intend to purchase (so the either tax free or duty free price can be calculated).

UK Custom's Duty Free Allowances ... |
|
|
|
|
|
|
When you're travelling into the UK from an EU Country you can bring in the following goods without incurring any additional customs duty:
- 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs or 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%
- 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 250g of tobacco or 50 cigars
- 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water
- Other goods up to £145, including souvenirs.
- Duty paid and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
All tobacco and alcoholic goods brought into the UK must be transported by the passenger, both off the plane and through Customs, for whom they are intended, not split between passengers. The goods must also be for that person's individual use i.e. as gifts or for their own consumption, and strictly not for sale or payment to any other person. Otherwise these good will be considered as being bought for a commercial use.
Should Customs believe that the goods have been brought into the UK for a commercial purpose, the Customs Officer will ask a selection of questions and checks.
Customs Officers might ask about the type and quantity of goods. How much was paid and how often the passenger travels. About why so much was purchased. What the passenger's normal consumption is. Also if the excess goods have been concealed, or if they have been easily and visibly displayed.
Customs will suspect the following quantities:
- 400 cigarillos
- 3kg tobacco
- 3,200 cigarettes
- 200 cigars
- 90 Litres of wine
- 10 Litres of spirits
- 110 Litres of beer
- 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
Anyone found guilty by Customs for importing goods will have the said goods seized and they won't be returned. The same if caught selling the said goods. And the passenger could be faced with up to seven years in prison if found guilty.
Like the UK you'll find many Countries have their own individual laws on tobacco and alcohol goods allowed into their Country by one person. Do check with the Country you are travelling to if planning on importing or exporting large amounts as you could be required to carry paperwork covering the goods you are transporting.
Here are some of the EU Countries that have their own rules on cigarettes and some tobacco products: |
